In celebrating the spirit of optimism that shines through the thoughts and dreams of one extraordinary thirteen-year-old during the darkest of times, this play brings home the reality of the hiding of the Frank family. During the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam, Otto Frank decided to hide his family, who were Jewish, after his elder daughter, Margot, was called to appear for transport to a Nazi labour camp. Otto Frank's office assistant hides them in the attic above the office, that was called The Annexe. What you will see tells the true story of the struggle to keep the family and their aquaintances, hidden and safe, as the Nazis turn Amsterdam upside-down. Based upon Anne Frank's famous diary, this is an imaginative recreation of the interior life of Anne Frank during her years in hiding. Dreams of Anne Frank won the 1992 Time Out award for best children's production and has been performed around the world, and it is our honour to perform it for you now, here in Saxilby Village Hall.

This play has been a catalyst in stimulating young people not only to question the past but also to confront the very real issues of racism today. What this family endured and the courage with which they and their friends dealt with their self imposed exile is shown here in some small part and is a tiny recognition of the bravery of one thirteen year old girl, and her imagination and writings of the time endured prior to her death in Bergen-Belsen in 1945. This imaginative play with music de mystifies and humanizes Anne Frank's story of tremendous bravery, celebrating her vitality, while at the same time reminding us of the evils that led to her death and that of millions like her. She and her fellows should never be forgotten by any of us, whatever age and whatever culture.
